Synopsis
- This lesson introduces AgriSolar, a practice in which land is used for both agriculture and solar energy production.
- Students define agrivoltaics and ecovoltaics, examine where agrivoltaics can be implemented, and evaluate the agricultural, economic, and environmental benefits for their community.
- Students also create a scale drawing of a solar array on a farm and write a claim, evidence, and reasoning response about whether agrivoltaics can benefit local farmers.
Teaching Materials
Classroom Implementation:
- Although this lesson is based in Wisconsin, it may be adapted to other regions.
- This lesson can be used independently or as the first of five lessons in KEEP's AgriSolar Education Project.
- It includes a slideshow, student texts, vocabulary activity, suitability maps, and a scale-drawing rubric.
- Ask students to reflect how their opinions changed from the farmer-scenario polls at the start to the one at the end.
Materials:
- Outside of printouts, students will need graph paper and rules for the scale-drawing activity.
Extensions:
- Find out if there are any AgriSolar farms in your vicinity and plan a school visit.
- Ask students to brainstorm another climate solution that can solve two problems at once, like agrisolar.
