Maine Environmental Education Association and SubjectToClimate Launch the Maine Climate Education Hub
Maine Environmental Education Association and SubjectToClimate have launched an online platform with resources to enable Maine teachers to integrate climate change education across all grade levels and subjects.
The Maine Environmental Education Association (MEEA) and SubjectToClimate are announcing the launch of the Maine Climate Education Hub. The Maine Climate Education Hub uses the digital infrastructure of SubjectToClimate’s Core Platform to provide educators with free, credible, engaging resources on climate change education. The Hub includes:
Margaret Wang, COO of SubjectToClimate, notes, “We are so fortunate to have a broad coalition of Maine stakeholders, including several educators from Maine, to provide us with feedback on what they need to be able to teach about climate change in their classrooms.”
In 2021, the Maine Climate Education Summit united 200+ students, teachers, and community organizations. Their effort identified key recommendations for climate literacy, emphasizing the need for accessible, vetted, interdisciplinary, and place-based resources. The Hub is built to respond to this need and to further the Maine Department of Education’s Environmental Literacy Plan, created in collaboration with MEEA and the Maine Department of Education. Olivia Griset, Executive Director of MEEA, states, “The new Maine Climate Education Hub is a critical tool we will use to advance climate education in Maine in the next five years and work towards achieving the goals in the state environmental literacy plan. "
Carey Hotaling, Maine Hub Working Committee member and Steering Committee member of the Nature Based Education Consortium points out that, “none of us know all the most up-to-date science, can answer all the questions, or have all the answers.” However, by making it easier for Maine educators of all grade levels and subjects to teach about climate change and environmental justice, the Hub aims to inspire students to take actions on climate change that will expand into systemic change.
Join this virtual launch event on October 5 from 4:00-5:00 PM EST, when we will explore the Hub’s features and hear how Maine educators are integrating climate change education in their classroom.
SubjectToClimate is a nonprofit online connector for K-12 educators of all subjects to find credible and engaging materials on climate change at no cost.
Maine Environmental Education Association (MEEA), an affiliate of the North American Association for Environmental Education, works to build environmental awareness, accountability, and action by fostering youth leadership, empowering educators, shifting culture, and leveraging networks.
